  • Sharps must be in a medical‑grade sharps container.
  • Containers are available at low cost at the JCHD locations listed below.
  • All containers are subject to inspection before disposal.
  • Containers must be filled to capacity before you bring them to a kiosk.

Choose the Right Container

  • Use a puncture‑resistant plastic or metal container. Good options include:
    • An empty detergent or bleach bottle with a tight screw‑on lid
    • An empty coffee can with a secure lid
    • A sharps container from a local pharmacy
  • Do not use clear plastic or glass containers.

How to Use the Container

  • Place used needles, lancets, and syringes in the container right after use.
  • Put syringes in the container as one piece.
  • Do not remove, bend, break, or recap the needle.

Storage and Disposal

  • Keep the container out of reach of children and pets.
  • Seal the container tightly when it is three‑quarters full.
  • If you use a coffee can, cover the lid completely with heavy duct tape or electrical tape to prevent punctures.
