Old, unused, and expired medicines should be thrown away safely to protect your family and our community. Proper disposal helps prevent accidental poisonings, misuse, drug theft, and harm to the environment. Medicines that sit in cabinets too long can be dangerous, and flushing isn’t the best practice. Safe disposal keeps everyone healthier.

Where to Dispose of Medications

There are 10 drop‑off locations throughout Jefferson County where you can safely dispose of medications.
To use a drop box:

  • Place your medications in a clear Ziploc bag.
    • Do not include sharps or liquids.
  • Bring the bag to any drop‑off location.
  • Put it directly into the drop box, quick and easy.

At‑Home Disposal Options

We sometimes offer Deterra Drug Disposal Pouches at the health department. These pouches make it easy to deactivate medications at home. Once the pouch is used, you can simply throw it in the household trash. Call our office to see if we have them available.
