Jefferson County Food Code requires permits for food businesses, temporary food events, and new food establishments in Jefferson County.

Any business that prepares, serves, or sells food must have a current annual food permit. This includes restaurants, food trucks, grocery stores, schools, daycares, and other locations that handle food.

Our staff will review your setup, equipment, and food‑handling practices to make sure your operation is safe for the public. These permits help protect the public by making sure food is prepared and served safely according to the Jefferson County Food Code.

Opening a New Food Establishment

If you are opening a new restaurant, mobile food truck, store, or any business that serves food, you must complete our new establishment process. This includes:

  • Submitting a plan review (layout, menu, equipment, and processes)
  • Ensuring all equipment meets health and safety standards
  • Passing a pre‑opening inspection before you begin operating

Our team will work with you to make sure your facility is set up correctly and ready to serve food safely.

Temporary Event Permits

A temporary event permit is required for anyone serving food at a short‑term event, such as a festival, fundraiser, community event, or booth. Temporary event permits must be completed before the event and may require an on-site inspection.

Types of Temporary Food Permits

  1. Fair/Festival Permit: This permit allows you to operate at an event (at a single location) for up to 14 straight days. You do not need to get a new permit for each day of a multi‑day event. For example, if you work at a 3‑day fair, this permit covers all three days.
  2. Limited Use Permit: This permit allows you to operate at multiple locations for a short period of time. You can choose a permit that covers 1–3 days or 4–8 days.

Events with multiple food vendors must submit a permit for each vendor.
