Jefferson County Health Department provides free youth bike helmets at select community events throughout the county. We want to ensure all children will have access to the necessary protection while riding! Find our next bike helmet event on our events calendar.

Bike helmets can be used on anything the rider powers. Examples are bikes, scooters, roller skates/blades, skateboards, and even a hoverboard! Bike helmets are NOT intended to be used on motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, etc. These vehicles need helmets specially designed for high speeds.

Bike Rodeo

In addition to bike helmets, we offer a fun, educational bike rodeo to promote bike safety among children. The bike rodeo consists of a small riding course that children can practice and learn essential biking skills in a safe environment. A woman in a green shirt stands on a pavement with orange cones and chalk markings. A Salvation Army truck, tent, and inflatable slide are in the background amid lush trees.

Funding

Missouri receives funding from the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Bureau of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). This funding helps the state support and improve services for mothers, children, and youth and their families.

This funding is called the Title V MCH Services Block Grant. It provides the foundation for many state and local programs that focus on the health and well‑being of Missouri families. The Jefferson County Health Department uses this funding to support several programs including the bike helmets and bike rodeo.
