CDC Week 23 Epidemiological Analysis: (from JCHD Epidemiologist, Sara Wilton)

Our case count has only slightly decreased from the week prior, however, we are continuing to receive cases after our weekly reports are published, so it is possible that our small decrease may disappear within the next few days. Just as in week 22, the highest increase in cases was our 20–29-year age group and 50–59-year age group. Zero cases were reported from our long-term care facilities.

The Delta variant (B.1.617.2), which originated in India, is on the rise and now accounts for approximately 10% of all Covid infections in the US. We have not yet received any reports from the state of this variant being detected in Jefferson County. The proportion of cases from this variant is exponentially increasing and is expected to become the dominant variant in the US in the near future.

It is concerning because this variant is even more contagious than the Alpha variant (B.117) and may be associated with a higher risk of hospitalization and severe illness. However, recent studies have shown that two doses of the Pfizer vaccine were 88% effective against symptomatic disease from the Delta variant. There was only 33% protection after just one dose- emphasizing the importance of finishing that two-dose regimen. Studies are underway to determine the effectiveness of Moderna and J&J against this variant, but comparable results are expected.

All this to say that communities with a low percentage of vaccinated residents may see a sharp increase in cases in the near future. Our number of fully vaccinated residents (26.96%) and the total number of doses administered to residents has been slow to increase in the past few weeks, so our community-based vaccine outreach is incredibly important now that preventative measures are relaxing.
