YELLOW Status | 7-day rolling average cases per day per 100,000 residents: 3.94 | Positivity Rate: 3.94%
CDC Week 24 Epidemiological Analysis: (from JCHD Epidemiologist, Sara Wilton)
Our cases increased 5% from the week prior and the percent positivity increased as well. We are still seeing the highest number of weekly cases come from our 50–59-year age group. Zero cases were reported in our long-term care facilities for the third week in a row.
The proportion of cases from the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) is expected to increase. The Delta variant has been detected in Missouri. We have not yet received any reports from the state of this variant being detected in Jefferson County, however, because of the time it takes to sequence a sample, we may not be notified that a person had a particular variant until weeks after a person tests positive. This is concerning because this variant is even more contagious than the Alpha variant (B.117) and is associated with a higher risk of hospitalizations and severe illness.
Since there is a significant time lag, it’s important that we continue practicing prevention including vaccination. Those who are feeling sick should get tested and those who test positive need to isolate for the recommended time frame. There are individuals in our county who can’t get vaccinated (particularly kids who are not eligible yet), so the best way to protect them is to control community transmission. When we slow the spread, it benefits everyone.
