Take 20 Hand Washing Campaign

Take 20 is a program designed to improve food handler handwashing practices through a variety of tools. Take 20 is a reminder for individuals to remember to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds. Good handwashing practices are a vital part of food safety.

Each year, one in six people will get a foodborne illness. This could be you, your spouse, friends, or your customers. Even the most well-meaning employee could spread foodborne illness if proper handwashing techniques aren't fully utilized.

There are thousands of germs on a human hand at any given moment. When hands come into contact with food or contaminated objects, they can pick up dangerous germs. Hands easily transfer dangerous bacteria and viruses to food, leading to dangerous and even deadly foodborne illnesses. Taking just 20 seconds to wash your hands can prevent an illness or save a life.

Monthly Themes

Jefferson County Health Department Environmental Public Health Specialists delivered annual calendars to food service establishments across the county. Each calendar has 12 monthly themes centered around washing your hands, especially within the food service industry. Establishments are encouraged to highlight the monthly message with their staff and take the pledge as a facility!
