Due to reduced operating revenue the Jefferson County Health Department has been forced to adopt a temporary mosquito control protocol. This protocol will govern the implementation of mosquito control, if any mosquito control can be provided, until revenues are capable of supporting a more comprehensive control capability. If operating revenue can not be obtained, surveillance and control operations may be suspended indefinitely.

fight the biteWhy is Mosquito Surveillance and Control Important? Mosquitoes are more than a nuisance. They are historic carriers of diseases that affect humans and animals world wide.Since its introduction in the United States in 2001 the West Nile virus remains a viable viral disease. Localize outbreaks of the virus occur yearly in varying severity. Recent activity involving outbreaks of Chikungunya localized in St. Maarten and Dengue Fever in Florida, the Florida Keys and Texas and more recently a locally transmitted case of Dengue Fever identified in New York are examples of invasive diseases that are fast becoming looming local threats. The movement of the diseases around the globe and the local activity of mosquito borne diseases in the United States are the reasons why maintaining the expertise and infrastructure for surveillance and control of mosquitoes locally is important. The surveillance and control of mosquitoes is important to the public because of the cost economically and even emotionally as demonstrated by the following video:
